A staple in the Formula 1 calendar, the Hungarian Grand Prix is that classic race known to all, situated on a layout at the iconic Hungaroring, and with some of the most passionate fans out there, it’s a drive that most look forward to.

What makes this race so special to many is that it is also one of the few to be staged in Eastern Europe — combining the presence of a more dynamic range of fans with the array of engines on the Formula 1 grid. This year, the Hungaroring venue — host to the Hungarian Grand Prix — is also to undergo some fantastic developments, along with a renovation of the grandstand itself.

The history of the Hungaroring

The original circuit on our race calendar behind the Iron Curtain was Hungary's. The Hungaroring first opened in 1986 and has been home to many great races. Fans and drivers love this circuit because it's hard to pass in Hungary. Some predict this guarantees a boring race. The track's twisty nature does indeed discourage overtaking.

Great drives: Jenson Button shaking his bad "wet weather" tag in 2006, in an excellent drive to win his career's first grand prix at this venue. Notably, Jacques Villeneuve passed Michael Schumacher around the outside of T3. This was the "man on the move" moment of 1997 - Jacques' championship-winning year. Today, 2022, most of the track's corners have two different lines through them - providing great racing whenever we've visited since 1986.

The need for renovation

Several critical factors drove the renovation of the grandstand, with safety and fan experience topping the list, along with the need for modern amenities. Not rebuilding wasn’t an option.

Structural integrity wasn’t up to code, which meant there weren’t enough routes for emergency exit, to name a couple of the key safety issues. And if you can’t get people out of the building safely, not only do you jeopardize the welfare of attendees, but you also limit the number of attendees that are allowed into a venue per event. So safety was a must. (Check.)

Next on the list was enhancing the fan experience. This was another challenge because there wasn’t much on the list that the existing space was doing right related to the fan experience, i.e., comfortable seating, adequate sightlines, and modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi were lacking.

The logic here is: If we create a more pleasing environment for people that gives them better experiences while they are there, they will have better memories related to that environment, which will have positive branding implications for future attendance and general engagement for associated events. And so, I absolutely 'got' the argument for an improved space for the betterment of the institution’s projective narrative and/or branded path. Start on a positive, end on a positive, right? This was also a must. (Check.)

Features of the new Grandstand

The new addition to the Hungarian Grand Prix has an amazing total capacity of 15,000 attendees. Each and every one of them is guaranteed to have a clear view of the race all thanks to its advanced and modern design. This grandstand has a tiered design that gives it an elevated, almost amphitheater-like look. Besides the tier design, the grandstand also allows the Hungarian Grand Prix to reduce the carbon footprint of the races since the stands used many recycled and eco-friendly materials.

Not a single one of the 15,000 attendees (including you in the future!) can have their seats blocked since the stands are laid out in a unique raised design that avoids any potential viewing blocks. This design is great for all types of events, ranging from car races to other types of bike and even horse races. The Hungarian Grand Prix can check off the race list and can potentially complete the other two options in the future with the country's many bicycle events and their popular horseback-riding community.

Impact on the Hungarian Grand Prix

The new grandstand at the Hungarian Grand Prix is set to significantly level up the atmosphere of the event. For fans, this will mean better sightlines as the seating capacity has been increased. Additionally, the design of the grandstand will make it more a part of the event, so you are really in the race. Its natural design won't affect the acoustics of the engines as they roar by, or the wave of the crowd when their favourite driver takes P1. For event organizers, teams, and sponsors, that level-up will mean the opportunity to do more.

Future of the Hungaroring

Home to the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986 but now renowned for its tight and twisty layout being at odds with the latest generation of Formula 1 cars, there is a suspicion that the Hungaroring has been allowed to stand still. In many ways, it has. That’s why it must be revamped to enhance the show and improve the live spectator experience.

The basic facilities will need to be upgraded, but there could also be a case for adding in new grandstands, gravel traps, and cones mandated for fully modern circuits to satisfy the letter of the latest FIA Circuit Licence criteria. The circuit doesn’t have to be strictly limited to one annual F1 race weekend, though. It should change its commercial approach to tap into new fans, hosting support races, fan festivals, and esports events to keep the Hungarian Grand Prix both socially and commercially relevant as the sport evolves.

The Hungarian Grand Prix has undergone a significant transformation recently that greatly changed the experience of the race for the spectators at the track. The atmosphere of the race at the Hungaroring and the fans' experience at the facility were greatly enhanced as the grandstand was completely transformed. With upgraded seating, facilities, aesthetics, and sightlines, the experience of attending a F1 race on-site at a grandstand is about as comfortable and as fun as you'll find at any track.

Although Hungary's race package lines up on the more expensive side of The 2021 F1 Calendar, the chance of snagging that deal while all F1 events remain on hold doesn't look promising.
