For the fans who attend a Formula 1 Grand Prix, one of the top worries is getting to the circuit. Hotels aren't always nearby, parking can be a challenge, and shuttle buses may be packed. For a lot of people, the thought of just summoning an Uber or a taxi is the neatest and most feasible solution. But how well does this work in practice?

Are taxis and Ubers allowed at F1 circuits?

In nearly every city that holds a Formula 1 event, taxi and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are readily accessible. The variable is how near to the circuit these cars can drop you, since, on race day, the roads around the venue are shut down, and most cars aren’t allowed to come very close (with the exception of some event staff and disabled-access vehicles). Taxis and rideshare services are directed to offsite pick-up and drop-off locations, usually a short walk from the gates.

The benefits of using Uber or taxis

  • Convenience – You don’t need to worry about parking permits or driving in unfamiliar traffic.
  • Flexibility – You can leave when you want, rather than waiting for a scheduled bus.
  • Comfort – Particularly helpful for families, groups, or anyone carrying gear.

Those fans who are situated in city centers or hotels lacking shuttle services likely find it much easier to travel by car than to wrestle with public transport.

The downsides to be aware of

While Uber and taxis are possible, there are some common challenges fans face across different Grands Prix:

  • Indirect access – Drop-off points can be far from the entrance, requiring extra walking or shuttle rides.
  • Return delays – After the race, demand for rides soars, and cars may be scarce or very slow to arrive.
  • Surge pricing – Prices can be much higher around race times, especially in cities where the circuit is far from the center.
  • Driver cancellations – Some drivers cancel when they see the heavy traffic near the track, which adds to delays.

Because of this, many fans still prefer official shuttle buses or public transport for the return journey, even if they take an Uber or taxi in the morning.

How to make it work

If you do plan to use Uber or a taxi for an F1 race, a little preparation makes the experience smoother:

  • Check official drop-off points before the race so you know where you’ll be dropped.
  • Arrive early to avoid traffic bottlenecks close to start time.
  • Plan your exit — leaving slightly before the end or waiting a while after the flag drops can help avoid the biggest rush.
  • Consider combining options — many fans take an Uber one way and use public transport or shuttles on the return.

The bottom line

Taking an Uber or taxi to a Formula 1 race is possible but it is not a service that will take you right up to the front door of the racetrack. While the aforementioned means of transportation can deliver fans to within 0.2 miles of the front doors, it isn't quite the same as being dropped directly off. Plan on walking up to a 10-minute distance to get to the front doors of the venue from where you're dropped if you come by taxi or Uber.
