Reaching the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort can be one of the most enjoyable facets of the weekend—if you prepare properly. Because Zandvoort becomes predominantly car-free during the Grand Prix, most fans come to the event via the train, shuttle bus, bicycle, or their own two feet. Here’s a comprehensive guide to getting from your hotel in Amsterdam or Zandvoort to the track with as little hassle as possible.
By far, the train is the most popular and practical way to get to Zandvoort from Amsterdam or nearby places. The Dutch Railways (NS) operates a good number of trains that make it to Zandvoort aan Zee, with even more trains going to Zandvoort during race weekend. During the peak times of day, fans will see trains leave every 5 minutes to Zandvoort, making the train service the choice of most of the odd 60,000 fans who attend during race weekend.
Traveling from Amsterdam takes about half an hour, and from Haarlem just 10 minutes. When you get there, the beach promenade will take you on a 15-minute walk to the circuit gates.
Tips:
We used the train at the Dutch Grand Prix when Fastway1 attended, and it was really easy getting to and from the track. But, be ready ro cramped trains and standing the whole way tot he track. There are no assigned seats.
For a more laid-back journey to the Dutch Grand Prix, consider using the official shuttle buses. They service more than 140 pickup points throughout the Netherlands, including downtown Amsterdam.
You are assured a seat on these coach buses, which deliver you very close to the circuit. They may not be the most economical option for daily returns, but at €29 to €40 round-trip, they don't break the bank either.
Buses from Haarlem and various regional hubs run often and are very user-friendly, especially the buses from Haarlem that take a mere 15 minutes to reach the track. These are bus lines 300 and 356.
If you're staying in Zandvoort or the nearby towns of Bloemendaal or Haarlem, cycling is, without doubt, the best way to reach the track. In recent years, over 45,000 fans have pedaled their way to the race.
Vast, no-cost bicycle parking abounds near the circuit, and most nearby lodgings have bicycles or e-bikes to rent. Riding through the coastal dunes is usually as fast as any alternate mode of transport, and it is almost always more scenic.
Zandvoort, a tiny coastal hamlet, is just a 15–20 minute stroll from its center to the beach. You can walk that same path to the circuit in 15–20 minutes if you happen to be in or near Zandvoort's center. This is, of course, free, and it offers plans more flexible than DRS.
A tip from the pros: After the race on Sunday, beat the crowds headed to the trains by sticking around the beach or a local restaurant for a while.
Regular traffic can’t get into Zandvoort for the Dutch GP. That means no ride-shares, taxis, or private cars allowed without a permit. Only the Dutch GP team and a few other close-to-the-venue individuals get to come and go. That also means no spectating on public roads, since they’re off-limits too.
When driving is necessary, opt for one of the official Park & Ride spots located outside of the city (such as Amsterdam Zuid, Amstelveen, or Hoofddorp). They are good options because they offer reserved parking and shuttle service to the main event venue. Just be sure to book in advance!
Fans with limited mobility can enjoy the Dutch Grand Prix fully, as the organizers have made accessible train platforms and shuttles easy to use for those in wheelchairs. They also have designated parking for fans with disabilities, viewing platforms inside the circuit for people in wheelchairs, and more. So, it should be a good time for all no matter the level of mobility. They are doing it right.
Arrange these services ahead of time, and plan to travel at less busy times—earlier or later than the busiest times—to avoid crowds.
